There is considerably more interest in Grain Sorghum or milo production in Mississippi this year.  Fortunately, Mississippi State University also conducted Grain Sorghum Hybrid Trials this past year for the first time in several years, so we are very happy to have some good local data to base sorghum hybrid selection decisions.  Here is a link to the MSU Grain Sorghum Hybrid Trial data: http://msucares.com/pubs/crops3.html#sorghum

As always, our University Variety Trials are based upon voluntary participation,  so please encourage our seed partners to submit sorghum hybrids for evaluation in the MAFES Variety Testing Program.

Additional hybrid performance data is available from the University of Arkansas Variety Testing Program (http://www.arkansasvarietytesting.com/) and the LSU AgCenter Hybrid Trials(http://www.lsuagcenter.com/en/crops_livestock/crops/Sorghum/Variety+Trials++Recommendations/).

Those grain sorghum hybrids yielding consistently well above the mean in Mississippi’s trials as well as the adjoining states dryland trials noted above include:

  • DEKALB DKS54-00

  • Dyna Gro 765B

  • Pioneer 84P80

  • Pioneer 84G62

  • Terral REV 9782
