Last week Mississippi State University announced a three-year transition plan of its Foundation Sweetpotato Seed Program which is operated out of the Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch Experiment Station in Pontotoc, MS.  The intent behind the transition is to expand the in-state production of certified sweetpotato seed roots, better meet the needs of Mississippi sweetpotato producers, and address emerging threats to the industry.  The full transition plan can be viewed via this link: Mississippi Sweet Potato Foundation Seed Program Transition Plan

Year 1 of the plan allows for sweetpotato producers to place orders for “second cutting”, greenhouse-grown, G0 slips.  These slips should be available by June 15, 2019.  There is a minimum order of 1,000 slips and the cost this first year is $300 / 1,000 slips.  After greenhouse-grown slips have been transplanted, are established, and produce running vines, the producer can cut additional slips in their field to increase acreage of G1 plants and eventually G1 seed roots.  Purchasers of foundation sweetpotato slips are encouraged, but not required, to follow certification standards set forth by the Mississippi Crop Improvement Association regardless of their intent to have their seed roots certified.  Orders will be accepted through October 31, 2018.  The order form is available here: 2019 Foundation Sweetpotato Plant Order Form
