For the third consecutive week, bollworm trap catches increased in the MS Delta region, with a very high catch of 1224 caught in one trap in Sunflower Country this week (7-day total). In every county this week’s bollworm catch was 2-10x above the 10 year average catch for this week, so current bollworm pressure is very high. While at much lower numbers, tobacco budworm catches have also increased each of the last 3 weeks in both the HIlls and Delta regions. Bollworms will lay eggs in green silking corn where available, but in areas where the corn has reached the brown silk stage, bollworms will seek out other hosts like cotton and soybean.

In these regions, have you found any of these two species surviving on Bt cotton? What is the performance of Bts with vip3a?

Bollworm commonly survives Bt cotton that does NOT contain Vip3A. Vip3A still seems to provide high levels of bollworm control. Tobacco budworm is still very susceptible to Cry1Ac, so it does not survive in any Bt cotton varieties.
