Numerous plant diseases have been observed over the past several weeks as out corn crop continues to mature. Many of the diseases listed in this post are not problematic once corn reaches milk/dough and are simply presented to aid in the diagnostics at the field level.
Foliar diseases have started to pick up in the Mississippi soybean crop. At present, a few observations of frogeye leaf spot have been made, but by far the increased incidence of Septoria brown spot continues for the second year in a row.
Fungicide phytotoxicity is a real malady that can occur following the application of a fungicide that contains a DMI. Some fungicides are more prone to producing phytotoxicity than others. Be aware of the products and active ingredients that can result in phytotoxicity before making the application, then you won’t be surprised by the injury.

Irrigated locations containing the MSU official corn hybrid trials (OHT) were evaluated for foliar diseases during the 2021 season. Curvularia leaf spot and southern rust were the two most commonly observed diseases. Little if any northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) was observed; however, where observed the evaluations were captured and are contained in the associated tables from each location. Presently, the evaluations from the irrigated locations (n=5) are included in the current post.
