Foliar diseases have started to pick up in the Mississippi soybean crop. At present, a few observations of frogeye leaf spot have been made, but by far the increased incidence of Septoria brown spot continues for the second year in a row.
Fungicide phytotoxicity is a real malady that can occur following the application of a fungicide that contains a DMI. Some fungicides are more prone to producing phytotoxicity than others. Be aware of the products and active ingredients that can result in phytotoxicity before making the application, then you won’t be surprised by the injury.
Once again we’ve reached mid-season in the soybean crop. Over the past several days there have been lots of calls seeking clarification regarding the R3/R4 foliar fungicide application in soybean. The current blog post presents data from non-replicated, large plot strip trials conducted between 2018 and 2023 to determine the response of soybean to foliar fungicide application made automatically.

During 2023 multiple soybean OVT locations were observed for the presence of disease. The Verona, MS location was observed to have the most consistent frogeye leaf spot data across all of the varieties planted. Observations were made and those are reported in the corresponding data tables.
At present the Mississippi wheat crop looks pretty good. Keep in mind that there are some common disease issues that can occur throughout the wheat acres in the state. Proper identification of those diseases is an important first step before deciding on a specific management alternative.
The cultivars contained in the 2023 Mississippi State University Official Variety Trial (OVT), as well as several additional cultivars, were field-evaluated for their susceptibility/resistance to stem canker. Trials were conducted in Stoneville with toothpick-inoculated plants. Tables contain the average of the field observations (on a 0-9 scale) as well as an assessment of resistance to stem canker (R, MR, MS, S) based on the evaluations conducted.

Non-irrigated locations containing the MSU official corn hybrid trials (OHT) were evaluated for foliar diseases during the 2023 season. Curvularia leaf spot was the most prevalent foliar disease observed. A limited amount of southern rust was observed at two locations. Data are presented as the severity of each disease from each irrigated location on a 0-9 scale for each of the hybrids included in the irrigated location evaluations. Presently, the evaluations from the non-irrigated locations (n=5) are included in the current post.
Irrigated locations containing the MSU official corn hybrid trials (OHT) were evaluated for foliar diseases during the 2023 season. Curvularia leaf spot was the most prevalent foliar disease observed. A limited amount of southern rust was observed at two locations. Data are presented as the severity of each disease from each irrigated location on a 0-9 scale for each of the hybrids included in the irrigated location evaluations. Up until the past week the disease situation in the MS corn crop has been rather quiet. As the crop matures, additional diseases will likely be observed. Aside from Curvularia leaf spot being the most noticeable disease throughout the state, I have received numerous calls regarding corn smut as well as Physoderma brown spot.
